“Baladna” Company to CNN: The first batch of the imported cows will arrive to Doha via Qatar Airways
October 20, 2017Dubai, United Arab Emirates- (CNN)
The first batch of cows imported by the Qatari “Baladna” Farm’s dairy production, from Germany, Netherlands, United States and Australia arrived to Doha, on Tuesday, according to what the company considered as a plan to meet 30 to 35% of the country’s need of dairy products. “We are not trying to compete with the local farmers, we are just trying to compensate the shortage” said John Dore, CEO of Baladna, owned by “Power International Holding”, in a statement to CNN.
He added that the next step will be “achieving 100% self-sufficiency”, of dairy products. The first batch, which consisted of 165 cows, arrived on Tuesday airlifted on Qatar Airways Cargo planes to Hamad International Airport in Doha, according to what Dore considered as a plan to import approximately 4000 cows, and estimated that the production will reach 100 tons of milk every day. The Qatar Airlines confirmed to CNN the arrival of the shipment to Doha.
This shipment arrived in a time where Qatar is facing what it is describing it as a “siege”, after the severance of diplomatic and economic relations of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt with Qatar, 5 weeks ago, accusing it of supporting terrorism, charges repeatedly denied by Doha. An air, sea and land traffic blockade was also imposed on Qatar by the Gulf countries; Qatar had then resorted to Turkey and Iran to import its need of food products, which were used to be imported from Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.
